Georginio Wijnaldum scored in the eighth minute as Liverpool beat Manchester City 1-0 in what was a very disappointing game which did not live up to the hype.
The clash for second was tipped to be a fast-paced exciting encounter but with just eleven shots in the entire game it proved to be anything but.
Liverpool take the lead
Liverpool went ahead early in the game when Wijnaldum got on to the end of a cross from Adam Lallana which saw the ball fly past Claudio Bravo.
Aleksander Kolarov could do nothing but watch as the Reds forward got away from him and Pep Guardiola’s men were suddenly a goal down early and having to chase the game.
It was Liverpool’s only shot on target whilst City managed only two shots on target for the entire game.
A disappointing game
Given the types of matches this fixture has produced in the past and the attacking brands of football both clubs are playing, fans would have been hoping for a goal fest or at least a positive game.
But the 90 minutes was quite the opposite which was very uncharacteristic from both teams especially City who welcomed their main striker Sergio Aguero.
Despite the lack of chances in the game Liverpool definitely deserved the victory who settled into the game much quicker than their opponents and defended well to ensure City never really had a foothold in the game.
City title hopes slip
This loss now means that City have now slipped to fifth place after Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs won their games and are nine points behind Chelsea.
City will now most likely be competing for a top four Champions League place with Manchester United currently three points behind them and in very good form.
Liverpool on the other hand look like the only team with any hope of catching Chelsea as they sit six points behind the leaders.
With Klopps side due to face Chelsea at the end of January it could be their chance to put some pressure on them and potentially create a two horse race for the title.
