Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial scored as they helped Manchester United come from 1-0 down to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 to cap off 2017.
Middlesbrough had the first chance as Adam Traore broke through the middle but failed to play in Stewart Downing or Alvaro Negredo who were both free.
United’s first chance came when a brilliant overhead effort by Paul Pogba deflected off the post.
Anthony Martial rattled the post with great shot outside the box before Zlatan Ibrahimović appeared to have score the goal after beating Victor Valdes to the ball.
Match referee Lee Mason however, ruled that Ibrahimović had fouled Valdes in the process and awarded a free kick for a high boot.
Replays showed that Ibrahimović got to the ball first and had no effect on Valdes but the goal remained disallowed and United went into the break on level terms with Boro.
Middlesbrough take the lead
After the break, Ibrahimović’s close range effort was denied by Victor Valdes as the crowd began to grow restless for a goal.
The goal eventually came at the 67th minute when Negredo knocked a ball down for Grant Leadbitter who fired past David De Gea to put the visitors ahead.
The goal forced an immediate United change as José Mourinho replaced Chris Smalling with Marcus Rashford who had an immediate effect on the game.
At 78 minutes Rashford went down in the box but Mason did not give the penalty adding to the home fans frustrations.
The breakthrough came at 85 minutes when Ibrahimović headered the ball down to Martial who made no mistake as the Frenchman equalized for United.
Just one minute later after Boro were denied a spot kick, Juan Mata found Pogba who’s header went into the back of the net as United completed their comeback.
Middlesbrough will feel that they missed out on at least a point but United showed that they are becoming a force to be reckoned with as they won their fifth league game in a row.
