Manchester United and Liverpool clash at Old Trafford today in what is expected to be a mouth watering affair
Manchester United are on a 9 game winning streak while Liverpool haven’t won in their last three games. Only four points separate the two sides. A win for United would maintain their unbeaten run and keep them in touching distance of the top four. A win for Liverpool would keep their title hopes alive and put some distance between their fierce rivals.
With both teams needing to win and some of the big names returning this is shaping up to be a fantastic affair…
Time: 4pm BST
Stadium: Old Trafford
Jose Mourinho calls for improvement:
The players have to improve, I have to improve and I’m sorry to say that I think the fans also have to improve for a big match on Sunday.
I always think that we are responsible for the fans’ participation in the game. It’s our responsibility. If we play very well, very enthusiastic, the fans come to the pitch and play with us.
We have absolutely amazing fans but what I feel is Sunday is a special match for us, for Manchester United supporters, so my invitation is don’t come to the theatre, come to play, play with us.
Ander Herrera take on the game:
The important thing for us is to keep our minds calm and stable because in this kind of game you can easily receive a red card after five or ten minutes because the passion and emotion is high.
Of course for all of us, we know our history.
We know which is the biggest game for all our fans are the ones against Liverpool and City. Now both teams we are in a very good moment so that makes the game even more enjoyable.
Rojo and Ibrahimovic were a doubt throughout the week. But Mourinho says they are more likely to play than not. So expect both of them back in the starting lineup. Although Rojo could be replaced Smalling if there are any doubts still surrounding him.
Otherwise it is expected that United will field their full strength team
Eric Bailly is at the Africa Cup of Nations.
De Gea, Romero, Valencia, Fosu-Mensah, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Darmian, Shaw, Blind, Young, Fellaini, Carrick, Herrera, Schweinsteiger, Pogba, Lingard, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Martial, Rashford, Ibrahimovic, Rooney.
Jurgen Klopp on United’s tactics:
I have no idea what we have to do there, actually. We will be ready for all. It could be that United will not be as organised as they were at Anfield, but I am not sure it is likely. You can imagine a little bit how they will play but at the end it is always a little bit of an open question. How can you say 100 percent what they will do? I am not part of the meetings. Maybe they have a different plan.
Jose is a real competitor so if he thinks defending deep makes sense, I would not be too surprised.
Klopp on United’s quality:
I am not blind. I can see how good they are, how strong they are. Should we discuss Ibrahimovic or Mkhitaryan, Mata, Rooney, Pogba, Rashford. They have outstanding quality.
Maybe a lot of people who think about the game will think United are in a good run, Liverpool not that good.
I think it is the best time to jump, so let’s go.
It is expected that Coutinho will make his return from injury today. But reports suggest that it will be in the form of a bench role rather than a starting position.
Daniel Sturridge is also available but again is expected to add firepower to bench for Klopp to call upon.
Sadio Mane remains away at the African Cup of Nations
