Manchester United have confirmed the signing of 19-year-old fullback Diogo Dalot from FC Porto in a deal that is said to be worth about £19.3m.
The Portuguese defender made his Champions league debut against Liverpool in the round of 16 where Reds held Porto to a 0-0 draw at Anfield to go through 5-0 on aggregate.
A dynamic player, Dalot played a lot of his youth football in the midfield and even as a forward before moving back into the defence.
While Dalot identifies as a right-back, he has played a lot of his first team matches for Porto at left-back and has proven to have a lot of versatility across the field.
He made six appearances in the Primeira Liga this season where he managed to get two assists.
Dalot has played for various Portuguese youth teams and scored two goals in five games to help Portugal win the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship before he was later part of the U19 team that got to the quarterfinals of the same competition.
Dalot has put pen to paper for a five-year deal that will keep him at United until at least 2023 and is poised to be the perfect succession plan for incumbent right-back Antonio Valencia who turns 33 later this year.
At his unveiling, Jose Mourinho described Dalot as the ‘best full-back in Europe’ in his age group and United fans will be hoping that he is the solution to a long standing problem right-back problem.
