Crystal Palace have completed a shock move for Germany midfielder Max Meyer on a free transfer after his contract expired at Bundesliga runners-up Schalke. Could this be one of the transfers of the window?
Meyer was once rated one of the most promising talents coming through the German youth system which in itself is quite a statement. But after Schalke failed to meet his financial demands his contract expired and there was a very real possiblity that he would start the season without a club as suitors were put off by his demands. Crystal Palace have taken a gamble though and made him the top earner at the club.
The 22-year-old becomes the Eagles’ third summer signing and has signed a three-year contract at Selhurst Park. Meyer has been capped four times by Germany, but was not part of their 2018 World Cup squad.

“I’m proud to be here and I hope I can make the next step in my career. I want to give my best and I think we can have a good season – maybe better than the last.
“I played at Selhurst Park last season for Schalke and the atmosphere was perfect, and I can’t wait to experience the atmosphere for a Premier League game.”
There has been several rumours going around that Zaha could be on the move as he looks for a new challenge. Spurs and Chelsea seem to be interested, so the signing of Meyer could be Palace taking a proactive approach to bring in a potential replacement for their star player.
It would explain why Palace have dished out so much on a player that is far from the finished product, there are some reports saying that Meyer could earn up to £150k a week…
