Borussia Dortmund gifted Bayern Munich a two point gain in the league standings as they were held to a 0-0 draw against a stubborn FC Nürnberg side at the Grundig Stadion on Monday night.
It was a frustrating night for the visitors who had numerous chances in the first half including a great save from Christian Mathenia to deny Mario Götze to keep the scores level at half time.
Nürnberg also had their chances as they amassed seven shots throughout the game including a decent header from Lukas Mühl which went to the right of goal in the 60th minute.
Dortmund on the other hand had a total of 17 corners along with 72% of possession and 12 corners although the log leaders could not convert these chances and were instead left visibly frustrated as the final whistle sounded amid a hostile atmosphere.
Had Der BVB won the encounter, they would have sat five points on top of the log with 12 matches to play. Instead they now sit just three points ahead of arch rivals Munich who recorded a tight 3-2 win over Augsburg on Friday.
Both teams have an interesting two weeks with each playing a side in the bottom eight as well as one in the top five as Munich will have to negotiate Borussia Mönchengladbach in two weeks while Dortmund face Bayer Leverkusen next weekend.
Dortmund will have the advantage of a break this week while Bayern Munich are in action against Liverpool who top the Premier League tomorrow night.
With Dortmund already facing a near impossible task in the Champions League after losing to Tottenham Hotspur 3-0, their attetnion will now be fixated on the league as they look to lift the Bundesliga title for the first time since the 20015-16 season.
