Lille president Gerard Lopez says Liverpool have made contact with Nicolas Pepe’s agent over a potential summer move. This comes despite earlier reports that Liverpool had reassured Lille they had no interest in signing Pepe.
Lopez told RMC Sport in France: ‘I know there have been discussions with the player, not with us as a club. Liverpool have players in those positions and I read that maybe there were players who could leave, or not. I am not particularly focused on Liverpool. But it is true that there have been discussions with agents.”
Lopez added further that Bayern Munich enquired about Pepe during the winter transfer window and that Lille had already received two offers for him before the Africa Cup of Nations.
He added: ‘We had two offers before the Africa Cup of Nations. We’ll see after that. My position was to see if we could not do something before it. We had two proposals before it, I had two clubs.”
Despite reports saying Lille is demanding €80m for the player Lopez denies this: “The market is what it is. I never mentioned €80m in an interview, I said 40 to 80 million. It is sure that it will be an important transfer that is good for the player.”
