Watford has announced their first signing and the first signing of the 2020/21 transfer market. Pape Gueye has joined the hornets from French Ligue 2 side, Le Harve.
The announcement comes a day after French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe stated that no sporting events will occur until September 2020, essentially ending the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 seasons.
The 21-year-old has represented France in both the under 18 and under 19 levels. At Le Harve, the French midfielder has racked up 25 appearances with two assists for the Ligue 2 side.
The defensive midfielder has agreed to a 5-year deal with the club in principle. The deal will be effective from 1 July.
Gueye’s contract was due to expire in the summer with reports of Watford having agreed terms with the player early in the year.
According to the Watford statement, a pre-contract agreement has been lodged with the relevant authorities for approval.
